FSC®-certified (Forest Stewardship Council® C022952) hardwood from Africa delivers so many benefits that it is quite hard to think of a comparably ‘generous’ construction or building material. In several Central African countries, forestry is already the first or second largest employment sector.
FSC certification adds other benefits: competitive salary, on the spot professional training, health insurance, access to a company-run medical centre with qualified personnel, access to electricity and clean, drinking water, access to safe vaccines and medical equipment, access to educational facilities, free access to a 9’000 book library, free access to IT courses and free English language courses right in the heart of the forest, respect of indigenous peoples’ rights and hundreds of consultations per year…
At the same time as it protects forests and wildlife, SUSTAINABLE HARDWOOD MADE IN AFRICA drives employment, fostering social equity for thousands of forest inhabitants in one of the most landlocked areas of the Republic of Congo. Nowadays, companies are increasingly scrutinized against Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) indicators. Targeting 100 wood and pulp and paper companies from the three tropical basins, the SPOTT assessment led by conservation NGO ZSL (Zoological Society of London) is currently the sector’s most comprehensive. Social considerations add up to environmental and governance factors based on company disclosures. INTERHOLCO leads the SPOTT assessment for the fifth year in a row, thus contributing to a culture of transparency for wood ‘Made in Africa’.
